THE SANDY LANE BARBADOS GOLD CUP
The Barbados Gold Cup, considered to be the most prestigious horse race in the Caribbean, takes place each year at the historic Garrison Savannah, home to horse racing since Colonial days. The inaugural Gold Cup race, held in 1982 was intended to attract the best horses in the major racing countries within the Caribbean; Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and Martinique.
Barbados has produced a number of world class jockeys including Canadian based Patrick Husbands who often returns to the island, just to take part in the Sandy Lane Gold Cup. Patrick Husbands was awarded the Canadian Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockeys an unprecedented four years in a row and also made his debut at the Kentucky Derby in 2006.
A number of well know names in international horse racing have also been associated with the Barbados Gold Cup over the years, including jockeys Sandy Hawley, Lester Piggott and Richard Quinn as well as owners Eugene and Laura Melnyk and the late Robert Sangster. Past guests to the Barbados Gold Cup have included Johnny Cochrane, Sir Cliff Richards, Mike Atherton and Michael Vaughn.
For the past 12 years, Sandy Lane has proudly sponsored the Barbados Gold Cup which is now the most prominent and significant race in the region. The 27th Barbados Gold Cup will take place on Saturday, March 1st, 2008 and we will have a limited number of seats in our hospitality box so that guests who might be interested may watch the race.
